Australian political leaders from both major parties stand with #HongKong and #Hongkongers.
Today, @tedhuichifung and members of @Auhongkonglink met with Australia’s Foreign Minister @SenatorWong, Shadow Foreign Affairs spokesperson @Birmo, as well as Australian members of @ipacglobal led by Australian co-convenors @SenPaterson and @Deborah_ONeill.
All the leaders we met with expressed their solidarity with Hongkongers, especially those who have been and are being viciously persecuted by the current Hong Kong regime. We discussed various proposed concrete steps for supporting Hong Kong and Hongkongers, (1) including pushing for the release of Australian citizen Gordon Ng (who was convicted and sentenced to a lengthy jail term in the recent “47” case); (2) protecting Australia’s reputation as a legal system that does not support and/or legitimise authoritarian Hong Kong; (3) making perpetrators of Hong Kong’s crackdown accountable; and (4) pushing for the timely handling of multiple outstanding migration-related issues for Hongkongers seeking to settle or study in Australia.
We are grateful to all for taking the time today for meeting with us and listen to our concerns and proposals. And we will continue to push for concrete measures from Australia in its support for Hong Kong and Hongkongers.
