Even democratic U.S. allies such as Israel, the Philippines, and Japan could use this period to implement decisions Washington opposes.
The most worrying actions from this scenario will come from Beijing. From a U.S. defense perspective, it’s hard to imagine a better time for Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping to invade Taiwan than in this chaotic window. In a time of domestic turbulence, Biden may lack the domestic and congressional support, or the will, to commit the country to what could turn into World War III.
