For our first event in October, scholar and author Orville Schell, Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at Asia Society, brought his debut novel My Old Home: A Novel of Exile to JF Books.
Orville said the novel was written over thirty-five years, during which he also published more than a dozen books on Chinese history and politics. My Old Home is his debut novel–why would a scholar who has been covering China for decades turn to fiction writing? As a scholar and non-fiction writer, how does fiction writing present historical reality? In his debut novel, how does he build character, design the plots, and compose the narrative of a compelling story?
Starting from these questions, Orvilli, just like a novelist, shared his intellectual journey from writing non-fiction to novel in detail.
Perry Link, in his review, says that "Can the world understand China? Intimately? With a lifetime of diligent non-fiction to his credit, Orville Schell now joins Albert Camus in the faith that 'fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth.' The adventure succeeds, and we get some lovely original metaphors to boot."
Orvilel's novel paints a vivid portrait of two generations of Chinese intellectuals navigating the tumultuous waters of revolution and reform. His hopes, concerns, and insights about China are woven into the novel as well as his talk at JF Books.
It’s the most beautiful weather in DC now. Thanks to our readers who came to the event on a fall night, and all the wonderful questions that were asked.
JF Books will continue to invite scholars and writers from different fields to come over to share their experiences and insights with our readers. We’ll keep curating a richer, more diverse and free cultural space for everyone.
Hope to see you again at our next event by Teresa Buczacki(Han Xiu)
